This video gave me an overall look at James Monroe and his beliefs which include the Monroe Doctrine. It was essential for me to know some background history on Monroe so i could better
understand why he created it. The video touched on such topics as the Monroe’s Presidency,
Monroe Doctrine, the US and Europe, and the US and the Latin Americas.
Crapol, Edward P.. James G. Blaine: architect of empire. Wilmington, Del.: Scholarly Resources,
2000. p63.
I used this journal to understand what exactly James Blaine was trying to accomplish when
creating the Big Brother Policy. The journal goes through aspects of Blaine’s run for
presidency and his affiliation with the Republican party as well as his actions as secretary of
the state. I used a quote from this journal which explains Blaine’s reasoning for the Big Brother
policy which would satisfy the Republicans and also strengthen the US and make other
countries support us as well.
Healy, David. James G. Blaine and Latin America. Columbia, MO: University of Missouri Press,
2001. Print. p253.
In this book the author explains Blaine’s views on the Latin Americas and how the US could
use them in a positive way. The passages I read from this book are great because not only do
they show Blaines perspective but also they contrast and explain how things could have
negatively affected the US. I used a quote which discussed how the Big Brother Policy would
essentially create an ability to trade, which resulted in the PanAmerican Conferences, and
discuss economic issues as well as create profit.
Mitchener, Kris James, and Marc Weidenmier. "Empire, Public Goods, And The Roosevelt
Corollary." The Journal of Economic History 65, no. 03 (2005): 658692.
This journal written by two economics professors was mostly about the economics that had to
do with the Roosevelt Corollary. The book discusses how the corollary would be beneficial to
both the US and the Latin Americas, it dealt with alot of statistics and graphs which expressed
how the corollary affected different countries using real data. The quote which I included talks
about how the corollary actually promotes peace on everyones part, both European and
Southern American, and is a great chance to expand.
"Monroe Doctrine." Roosevelt Corollary. http://www.ourdocuments.gov/doc.php?flash=true&doc=56 (accessed February 18, 2014). p33.
This website explains about about the Roosevelt Corollary and summarizes it but it also
includes the actual document itself. I read through the document and understood from it that
the US would essentially act as a Western Hemisphere Police and prevent the Europeans form
being part of the western countries. After reading the acutal document i understood better what
the original plan was and used a quote which states the US as an acting police power directly
from the text of the document.

I read this journal to better understand the mindset of Theodore Roosevelt and to look at
things from his perception. After reading this article I realized that he was thinking with a
military mindset in which the only way to gain power was through expansion and naval
capabilities and expansion. This article emphasized that Theodore actually had the future in
mind when creating the corollary and believed it would truly help the US. I used a quote from
this journal which emphasized the fear of an imperialistic world.

This website helped inform me about the different ways the Roosevelt Corollary affected the
US. This was essentially a summary of how the corollary wasn't used to keep europ away as
much as it allowed for US intervention in Southern American Countries. I used this as a way to
learn about the basics of the Corollary and how it tied into the Monroe Doctrine.

The website is essentially written by those who wrote the Britannica Encyclopaedia and it
summarizes what the Big Stick policy was. The policy set forth by Theodore Roosevelt looked
at foreign countries in a way that had little to no respect and achieved things by force to gain
power. I talked about this policy in my writing while discussing Roosevelts emphasize on
military expansion.
